What exactly is composite decking?

Typically made from a blend of wood fibres and recycled plastics, composite decking is a man-made alternative to timber. These engineered boards are designed for durability and weather resistance, while featuring an authentic woodgrain textured finish to give you the best of both worlds.
Used for everything from garden decks and patios to outdoor seating areas, composite decking is a great choice for anyone seeking a clean, modern finish that will not rot and is easy to maintain. Unlike timber, it doesn’t require staining, sealing or painting – making it a more convenient option for many.
Benefits of composite decking
Composite decking boards offer a range of benefits that make them well suited to busy modern households. As mentioned, they are easier to care for than timber in the long run. Day-to-day cleaning is simpler too, usually just requiring a sweep and the occasional mop to keep them looking their best.
Another key benefit is the long lifespan. Designed to handle regular use and changing weather conditions, composite decking will maintain its structure and appearance over time. Moisture resistant, it won’t warp or rot like wood, reducing the need for repairs or replacement. It is also safer and more comfortable underfoot, as it’s less prone to splintering and cracking. With many products featuring slip-resistant surfaces, they also provide more grip than wet timber can.
With colour and finish built into the design, composite boards provide a more uniform look with minimal tonal variation across your deck. You can also expect less fading over time compared to stained or painted timber. Better yet, there’s a host of colours and timber effects to choose from, making it easy to choose a product that fits your style – from classic warm to cool contemporary styles.
So, what options are available? Let’s take a look at our brand new composite decking ranges.
New in: Composite Prime decking

Composite Prime is a UK-based manufacturer of composite decking and wood-alternative outdoor products for domestic and commercial use. The brand offers a full range of solutions, including decking, cladding, fencing and accessories for outdoor projects.
With a focus on durability and long-term performance, Composite Prime products are engineered to overcome common issues associated with timber, such as rot, splintering and weathering. They’re also made using recycled plastics and FSC-certified wood fibres for improved sustainability.
At AWBS, we are now stocking two of their premium decking ranges – Redux and Elements – offering a choice of solid composite and advanced polymer boards.
Composite Prime Redux

The Redux range is a solid composite decking solution which mimics the appearance of natural timber while offering greater strength and durability. Each board features a deep woodgrain texture with multiple unique patterns, helping to create a more authentic, less repetitive finish. And as a wood-free composite board, Redux also provides excellent resistance to moisture, reducing the risk of rot and swelling over time.

The range includes standard decking boards, along with matching fascia boards and flexible bullnose edging to help achieve a neat, professional finish. Installation is carried out using face-fix screws, allowing boards to be secured directly without clips.
There are a variety of colours available, including soft, natural tones like Cashmere, warmer shades like Havana and cooler greys such as Dusk and Smoke. Whichever you prefer, each design is also backed by a 30-year residential warranty for added peace of mind.
Composite Prime Elements

The Elements range offers a more advanced composite decking option, combining the look of premium hardwood with modern polymer technology.
These timber-free boards are designed to deliver a rich, multi-tonal woodgrain effect, creating depth and variation for a more natural finish. Colour options range from light, coastal-inspired tones through to richer, warmer shades, so there’s something to suit every garden style.
Thanks to a protective outer layer, Elements boards are highly resistant to moisture and stains, with spills easily wiped away. They won’t fade in the sun or splinter over time either, making them a practical choice for low-maintenance outdoor spaces.
Available in three different board widths, the range offers flexibility when it comes to layout and design. What’s more, boards can be curved or installed vertically as cladding, allowing for more creative, bespoke finishes. To complete your installation, we can also supply Cortex screw and plug systems, creating a concealed fixing for a clean, professional finish.
Designed for long-term performance, Elements decking comes with a 50-year warranty, including fade and stain protection, making it one of the most durable options available.
Introducing NewTechWood composite decking

If you’re working with a tighter budget, we’ve also just launched the NewTechWood Essentials range for residential projects.
Known for their UltraShield technology, the brand utilises a second-generation capped composite system for added protection against the elements. Each wood-effect decking board is fully wrapped in a protective outer layer, helping to resist stains, fading, moisture and everyday wear, while also providing a smooth, splinter-free finish.
In addition to decking, NewTechWood offers coordinated cladding, fencing and railing systems to create a cohesive garden design. Its products are also made using up to 95% recycled materials, reflecting their strong focus on sustainability.
NewTechWood UltraShield Essentials

A practical choice for homeowners, the UltraShield Essentials range offers a balance of durability, value for money and simple installation.
Each board features a lightweight hollow core for easier handling, combined with a fully capped outer layer for enhanced weather resistance. This ensures the decking maintains its appearance over time with minimal maintenance and no need for staining or painting.
A reversible design gives you two surface options in one board. You’ll find a natural woodgrain finish on one side and a more textured, slip-resistant surface on the other, as preferred.
Available in three colours – Coastal Grey, Silver Grey and Warm Chestnut – you can tailor the overall look to suit your space, from sleek and modern to more homely. Matching fascia boards and edging profiles are also available to complete your project.
Fixings and installation
At AWBS, we stock a full range of fixings to help you install your NewTechWood composite decking. Hidden clip systems are used across the main deck area to create a smooth, consistent finish, while maintaining the correct spacing for drainage and airflow. Starter and locking clips help keep boards aligned and secure. And for fascia and edging boards, we can supply colour-matched stainless steel screws for a robust yet discreet face-fix solution.
