Keen to learn more about this handy patio jointing compound? Read on to learn exactly what Joint-It Simple is, its advantages over cement mortar and how to apply it in 6 easy steps.

What is Joint-It Simple and what is it used for?

Joint-It Simple all in one dry paving jointing compound

Used by DIYers and professionals alike, Joint-It Simple is a resin-based jointing compound used for pointing and grouting patios. An alternative to classic cement and sand mortar or slurry grouts, this pre-mixed, one-tub jointing compound is designed to fill in the gaps between paving slabs, while allowing room for expansion in hot weather. With Joint-It Simple, you can stop weeds, water and dirt collecting in the gaps, to keep your patio looking its best and help it stand the test of time.

Benefits of Joint-It Simple vs traditional paving jointing methods

Ready to use formula

Unlike traditional mortar that must be mixed with the right amount of water, Joint-It Simple is ready to use straight from the tub. As a dry jointing compound, it’s also less messy and much easier to work with than wet slurry grouts.

Hard-wearing finish

Joint-It Simple contains 7 strong glues which dry rock-solid for a durable finish that won’t crack even in freezing temperatures. In addition, this patio grout can be applied in wet or dry conditions, and be cleaned with a power washer once cured without lifting out of the joints.

Suitable for a variety of paving slabs

When it comes to patio pointing, Joint-It Simple is a versatile choice. It can be used with all kinds of paving slabs, including concrete, natural stone and even porcelain patio tiles, which often need a specialist jointing compound with higher adhesive qualities than cement and sand mortar.

Kinder to the environment

Cement releases harmful gases like carbon dioxide. In fact, it contributes to around 8% of the global total each year. Cement can also alter the acidity of the soil around it, affecting plant growth. As such, it’s best to use a cement-free mix like Joint-It Simple where possible.

Water-permeable

Traditional mortar pointing is very porous, and it needs a sealant to protect it from water damage. In comparison, Joint-It Simple is water-permeable, allowing rainwater to drain away safely through the joints. This also helps to prevent pooling and potential flooding.

Available in a range of colours

While cement mortar is generally grey unless dyed, Joint-It Simple comes in several ready-mixed shades. Better still, it’s non-staining, so even if some residue gets left behind, it will fade over time. Choose from neutral, grey, dark grey or black to complement your patio.

How to use Joint-It Simple patio grout in 6 easy steps

The stages of pointing a patio with Joint-It Simple

What you’ll need:

  • 1 x hard and 1 x soft bristle brush
  • Hose pipe and fresh water supply
  • Tub of Joint-It Simple mix
  • Permeable patio foundation

Before you start…

Prior to applying Joint-It Simple, check that your patio foundation is permeable so water can drain through it. A base made up of 100-150mm deep compacted hardcore is ideal.

Then make sure that your paving slabs are securely fixed in place with a 1:6 cement and sharp sand mortar mix. Bear in mind that the gaps between each slab must be at least 3mm wide and 25mm deep for the jointing compound to work effectively. Not sure where to start? Next, check the weather. Although Joint-It Simple can be used come rain or shine, you should consider the temperature. If lower than 5°c, water could freeze in the gaps and impact results. Conversely, in weather over 30°c, it will be much harder to keep the surface wet and the mix will dry out quickly, so pick a day with a temperature between the two.

Finally, sweep off any debris and dirt and tie back over-hanging trees or plants that could shed into the wet grout. Then, hose the paving down with a good amount of water to clean the surface and prepare it for the patio grout.

Applying the mix

  1. Once the slabs are completed saturated with water, open the vacuum sealed tub of Joint-It Simple and tip it out onto the wet patio.
  2. Next, take a clean, hard bristle brush and sweep the jointing compound into the gaps between the slabs. While you’re working, make sure the patio doesn’t dry out, as Joint-It Simple hardens on contact with air and its residue can temporarily discolour your paving. Though this will wear off in a few weeks, it may be useful to get someone to help you with rewetting at this stage so you can avoid it in the first place.
  3. When all the joints have been filled, douse the paving again and then allow the patio and product to dry for 15-45 minutes, depending on how warm the weather is.
  4. Next, take a soft bristle brush and sweep the leftover compound into any joints that need a refill, then brush off the excess. NB: If you’re planning a similar project in the next 12 weeks, put the mix back in the tub and cover with water so it can be reused.
  5. For an even finish, use the side of a trowel or a finishing bar to smooth the top layer of grout. (It’s also important to wash your brushes after use so they don’t harden).
  6. After around 4 hours (longer in cold weather), the jointing compound should start to feel dry. However, don’t walk on the slabs for at least 24 hours and avoid power washing the surface until the patio grout is fully cured at around the 30 day mark.
